Abstract |
This study aims to identify the physical image elements of Seoul’s image and to analyze the spatial structure of the city image. The study analyzes the cognitive map by applying the theory of David Grahame Shane. Four elements for analyzing the image structure are landmarks, enclaves, armatures, and heterotopias. The conclusions of the study are as following. First, the Han River appeared as the most striking element of Seoul’s image. Image elements other than the Han River are mainly distributed in the city centers of Gangnam and Yeouido. Second, the Han River is a representative image element of Seoul and has a strong image as a physical boundary that determines the city’s spatial structure. Third, Gangbuk and Gangnam have formed a heterogeneous urban image. Fourth, due to the variety of city images, many regions in Seoul should be recognized as heterotopias. This study is significant in that it offers signposts for the direction of urban management and improving the city image so that it reflects citizens’ consciousness. |
