Abstract |
To create an ecological space in which man and nature can coexist, Jeollabuk-do and the Korea Forest Service planned the largest coastal arboretum in the nation, the National SMG Arboretum. However, the SMG arboretum plan lacks consideration for local culture and puts more emphasis on exhibition facilities and spaces. The plan needs an identity as a coastal arboretum and a focus on the restoration of local culture and the ecosystem. Therefore, we developed a theoretical frame for design alternatives with the existing plan and storytelling. We then applied storytelling practices to generate spatial sequencing and a sense of place. Storytelling consisted of three parts: story, context, and discourse. To develop design alternatives, local and ecological stories, connectivity with surroundings, and major issues about the SMG were derived from these aspects of storytelling. In site design, storytelling practices like naming, sequencing, concealing, collecting, and opening were applied to develop a spatial and circulation plan for restoring local culture and tidal flat ecological seccession. The application of these practices will offer possibilities for the cultural and ecological restoration of the SMG region. |
