Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to shed light on 'relationships' (affinity, trust, etc.) created through community gardening and analyze the impact of a community garden in a new town apartment complex on the formation of social connectedness among residents in order to suggest implications for future urban development planning and design. This study was conducted on community gardens in apartment complexes of 'Dongbaek district, Yongin city, Gyunggi province' located in the Seoul metropolitan area. The results were as follows. First, for network and partnership, community garden users showed higher interactions and more frequent leisure activities with their neighbors compared to non-users. Second, in trust and tolerance, it was demonstrated that community garden users had a stronger sense of affinity to neighboring residents. Third, in terms of civic engagement and civic consciousness, there was no statistically significant difference between community garden users and non-users. Fourth, as a result of social network analysis among residents, it was shown that social network among community garden users was more complex and extensive. In conclusion, this study suggested the implications that community gardens can be applied to the recently increasing urban development plans and designs in the metropolitan area so that social connectedness among residents can be reinforced. |
