Abstract |
This study aims to establish urban planning characteristics of urban linear park and its neighboring area by examining New York City’s ‘Special West Chelsea District’ where the conversion of the High Line’s decommissioned railroad took place. To this end, we analyze the urban management plan for the Special West Chelsea District and review the literature to compare our findings with the cases of urban management plan for the urban linear park and neighboring area in Korea. The research findings are as follows: First, different regulation was observed for different part of the linear park, distinguished by physical characteristics of the neighboring area. Second, urban linear park program was enhanced by promoting special land use of ‘art’ and displaying the facade element of the building. Third, regulations of the building facade and sound insulation were introduced in order to prevent invasion of privacy from the area of urban linear park. Fourth, building form of the surrounding urban linear park was regulated to provide a view corridor and to create a landscape scene for urban linear park and neighboring area. Fifth, a linear park was introduced to provide a green spine linking open spaces. Last, the location, volume, and the exit direction of elevators and stairs were regulated to improve walkability and accessibility of the adjacent sidewalk. |
