| Abstract |
Busan is well known for its hilly urban landscape. Particularly, compact and fine-grained hillside residential areas in the city center provide a unique visual character to this costal city. This paper reads this unique landscape of Busan by tracing it as a refugee settlement during the Korean War. This urban landscape can be well understood when reading it as a vernacular setting that supported the survival and daily necessities of refugee people from North Korea. Their life stories and residential form is inseparably interwoven at the early settlement villages and later forced-out resettlement areas. Along with literature survey, the collection of life stories of a refugee family provides an informative source of microscopic reading of this particular urban landscape. Mapping is employed as an important means for documenting the formative process of refugee settlements of Busan. |
