Abstract |
This study compares morphological characteristics of urban plazas in Korean cities and Italian cities based on aesthetic experiences of urban plazas users. The concepts of ‘Urban Picturesque’ and also Camillo Sitte’s design principles are reviewed, and the four comparison indices, such as visual surprise, shape irregularity, enclosureness and pedestrian-oriented spatial arrangement, are introduced. Using Viewshed Tool from ArcGIS, six urban plazas in Italian Cities, which were built in the Medieval or Baroque era, and three Korean ones from the 1st new town construction period of the early 1990s are analyzed through the lens of Isovist. The comparison analysis results show that there exist noticable differences expecially in visual surprise and enclosureness, which may lead to less satisfactory aesthetic experience in Korean urban plazas. The results may help improving design guidelines for Korean urban open spaces including urban plazas. |
