Abstract This study is about the changes and characteristics of urban planning approaches to the Gunsan city center for the past 60 years from the 1960’s to the 2010’s. The goals of this paper are to understand how Gunsan’s historic urban core has been conceptualized and managed in the urban planning system over the 60 years and to interpret its planning implications. For this purpose, this study was carried out based on the contents analysis of the Gunsan City’s official planning and related public documents. The characteristics of Gunsan’s planning approaches to its historic urban core are as follows; First, in the 1960s, the Gunsan City began to recognize the urban core and managed it in terms of urban improvement. In the 1970s, the urban core was the target for protection against fire. In the 1980s the urban core was considered as the part of development for the city center axis of Gunsan. While in the 1990s it was recognized as the object of urban development and tourism planning, the 2000s was the period when the municipal plans to preserve modern architectures and to redevelop the historical urban core were in tune. Second, the planning concepts for the historic city center in Gunsan were on the way of safety?tourism ?conservation? evitalization. In this process, the urban regeneration concepts for the Gunsan city center were forged. Third, as the city center planning was largely driven by development and tourism approaches, more conservation-oriented approaches were in demand to restore its identity as the birth place of Gunsan.
