| Abstract |
This study analyzed the public discourse produced during the park planning process for the site of the US military base in Yongsan and identified the structure and character of the urban discourse. Newspaper articles released by from nine major daily newspapers were collected from 1988 to 2016. In order to quantify the discourse analysis, text-mining technique was used as a research method. The planning process was divided into four sections, and the text data of each section were analyzed using the topic analysis and semantic network analysis. We interpreted the discourse structure and development pattern as urban ideological discourse based on the main theme and word network derived from the analysis. While the institutional urban discourse, the mainstream discourse, became the basis for an efficient project development, the diversity of the formation of the public sphere and related discussion were eliminated. The discourse of social movements have emerged as an antagonistic discourse gradually forming a social influence, and have played a role in presenting a new agenda in the direction of the planning process. With the emerging discourse of humanistic insight into urban space in recent years, the historical perspectives of a site had also gained a momentum. The implication of this research lies in its empirical methodology employed to analyze urban discourse regarding the production of a public place, and identifying the causes related to institutions, as well as suggesting recommendations for future policies. |
