Abstract The purpose of this study is to quantitatively analyze walking behaviors of elderly people using GPS equipment and to analyze empirically the characteristics of neighborhood environment influencing walking path and external activity of elderly people. As a result of analyzing the gait behaviors of the elderly using GPS equipment, the walking activity of the elderly is mostly performed in the neighborhood. It was found that the elderly walked 4.56 times a day and 244m at a time Also, it was found that the streets with high walking frequency of elderly people have high levels of vitality of the streets, pedestrian safety, pedestrian convenience and rest facilities, and space for promoting social activities. In the elderly, 15.7% of the gait pathways were observed to be bypassed, and, on average, they walked about 174m more. Also, staying activity was observed in 33.49% of the total path, and social activity was the most among external activities. This study is significant in terms of quantitative understanding of the walking behavior of elderly people using GPS equipment and suggesting implications for creating an aged friendly neighborhood environment based on this.
