Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to identify the spatial distribution pattern of villagers in different socio-political classes in the late 19th century using parcel-level land register data archived in the 『Chungchengnam-do Ryang-an』 of 1901. Using a map constructed from the 'Ryang-an', the author examined the spatial distribution pattern of villagers whose classes were defined based on a hierarchical classification system in the 『Gyeong guk-daejeon』. Results were as follows. First, the upper class tended to occupy the most favorable residential locations, regardless of the location of 'Chi-so', an administrative office complex. Second, the subordinate class mainly resided in front of the 'Chi-so', along the axis of the administrative offices due to administrative convenience. Third, the commoners, including government slaves, tended to reside nearby administrative facility. Of the commoners, those who occupied smaller lots than the legal allowance were located nearby upper class houses, probably due to their livelihoods depended on the upper class. Overall, the spatial pattern of this area was formed by the interrelation and occupation between villages in different classes. The significance of this study lies in 1) visualizing the residential distribution based not on administrative facilities but on villagers' socio-political classes, and 2) using the 'Ryang-an' as a data source for spatial analysis. |
