Abstract Commercial streets with similar names have appeared nationally and become and this study examines the "~ridangil" phenomenon, which seems to be connected to Internet Social Network Service(SNS) culture. The study aims to investigate the socio-spatial characteristics of ~ridangils using Internet trend data. ~ridangils have increased rapidly as place information-sharing culture in SNS has become mainstream, and names that mimicked popular places have become useful marketing tools. ~ridangils tend to be located a significance distance (within walking range) from the existing commercial area and surrounded by a buffer area that has limiting factors, such as legal restrictions, poor accessibility, and isolation. The trend suggests that ~ridangils are using Internet SNS trends to offset the lack of location propriety, thus they can be called "alternative commercial areas" in SNS culture. This also raises concerns that local identity could be lost, thus erasing historic place names. Understanding the factors behind this new phenomenon is increasingly important so that policymakers can implement measures to deal with it.
