Abstract |
This study focused on the importance of child participation within urban design and examines the case of Suwon city. The author has analyzed previous studies of child participation methodology, proposed five steps for child participation, and conducted two case studies based on the proposed steps. Each case adopted the basic processes of urban design (field investigations, site analysis, basic programs, and basic designs) and the children were instructed to present their work through site investigations, idea development, and production of drawings and models. Adult participants supported the children’s activities and compiled their opinions. In the case of the Dreamy Playground educational program, a space was created to reflect the children’s opinions. However, the children's design school did not reflect the opinion survey specifically. The integration of child participation within urban design processes requires continuous operation of the program and feedback on the operation results. This study is significant in its analysis of the child participation design through the a methodological framework. Evaluation and monitoring research will be required to enhance child participation. |
