Abstract New transportation infrastructure is considered as a means of spurring local development. However, the metropolitan transport network linking rural and urban areas tends to weaken the functions of rural centers by strengthening the influence of large city centers, according to the central theory. So far, the research on functional change of urban area after the opening of the metropolitan transportation networks has been ongoing frequently. However, the research focusing on rural areas have been lacking. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the functional change of the rural center in Yeoju after the opening of the Gyeong-gang line depending on the changes of the number of facilities and the frequency of visits. Firstly, the functions of regional exchange and leisure & culture activities were strengthened as the result of increasing the number of facilities and the frequency of visits. Secondly, as the number of residents who purchased specialized product and health care services in rural areas were decreased, the related functions weakened. Thirdly, because of the population decrease, the functions for basic residential life have not been enhanced even after the opening of the Gyeong-gang line. Fourth, the functions of public adminstration and support for agriculture are likely to vary at the policy of local governments. Also, there were differences in the frequency of visits to rural centers by age after the opening of the Gyeong-gang line. This study may be used as a basic data for the development of rural center policy.
