Abstract |
This study analyzed the qualitative changes to a neighborhood park led by a volunteer community of neighborhood residents. The park is located within a major area of social interaction in the neighborhood. The method of analysis was based on the grounded theory of qualitative research. The data collected were observations of qualitative changes to the park, which were then categorized and coded. There were three categories of qualitative changes: environmental, use, and cognitive. The results of the study are as follows. 1) Environmental aspects: The expansion of the park facilities was tailored to the users. The quality of the facilities were also improved. The parks is always pleasantly maintained, with attractive landscaping used to present scenery to its best advantage for visitors. The value of the major resources of the park has been improved through consistent management. 2) Use aspects: Visitors are more satisfied with the park and the activation of use is improved. The mature and civil relations between local residents in daily life, enhances the leisure and social functions of the park and expands these functions into other productive spaces. 3) Cognitive aspects: Giving local residents the ownership over the public space strengthens the personal attachment of urban residents and expands community consciousness through mutual trust between residents and the public. |
