Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual walking behavior and external activity characteristics of children in neighborhoods around an elementary school using GPS data and to analyze what neighborhood environment factors affect children’s walking behavior and outdoor activities. The major findings are as follows: First, the children’s travel behaviors in neighborhoods around the elementary school showed that walking is the most common activity, and it was found that 26 minutes of physical activity per day on average. Second, factors affecting children’s walking behavior were the presence of companions, pedestrian walking safety, walking convenience, senses and comfort, and vitality. Third, children’s activities in the street space showed similar levels of necessary activities and social activities and the act of waiting, conversation, greeting and playing appeared mainly. This study is meaningful in that it empirically analyzes the influence of children’s walking behaviors and outdoor activities based on actual walking data from children and parents. |
