Abstract |
This study investigates the location characteristics of the Kyungseong(Seoul) libraries as a modern urban cultural facility in the Japanese colonial period and examines how it changed by forming and developing a relationship with residents there. Accordingly, the study analyzes the process of change in the public library established by Japanese imperialism and the college-affiliated-libraries funded and supported by Korean national capital and foreign missionaries. The colonial government established public libraries in urban centers to serve as symbols of modernization, but it was located in the center of Japanese settlement as a means of cultural rule. Japanese obscurantist policies restricted Korean access. Conversely, the college-affiliated-libraries catalyzed the development of the surrounding area and nurtured national consciousness. Kyungseong also served as a social education center for residents. This study is significant because it serves as a basic reference for library research and demonstrates that our preference for libraries has been formed over time. |
