Abstract |
This study examined the influence of street parking on the pedestrian perception of street environment in low rise residential areas. Since controlled experiments are very difficult in urban spaces, the author conducted experiments using VR. The experiment asked participants to experience low-rise residential areas back roads using VR simulation. Participants asked to evaluate the pedestrian safety, landscape, suitability of activities and then were interviewed. The visual assessment experiments using VR were conducted in two phases. In the first round, an experiment was conducted on 12 virtual streets with different parking arrangements and parking density, and in the second round, parking density was fixed and in-depth tests were conducted on four streets with different parking arrangements. Results of this study show that the increase in the number of crossings in the parking arrangements had a negative effect on both perception of pedestrian safety and scenery quality. Interviews with participants in the experiment suggested that the perceived walking area, the number of vehicles and blind spots could be more important criteria and the straight parking arrangement was perceived as a better space than the cross parking arrangement. |
