Abstract |
This study analyzes the Neighborhood Unit Theory applied to the Youngdong Apartment districts Master plan(1976), with focus on Dogok district; First, the inconsistencies of Youngdong Aparatment district plan were analyzed in terms of Clarence Perry’s Neighborhood Unit Theory. Then, Dogok apartment district plan and the subsequent process of execution were analyzed, as well as the changes after the reconstruction during the early 2000’s. Dogok apartment district had inherent limitations in the planning of a neighborhood unit due to the existing urban structure made by land readjustment plan and the urban development; such as the lack of relevant physical plan for neighborhood unit, discrepancies between the boundary of the apartment district and superblock, and fragmentation of planned units(danji) within the district. Nonetheless, Dogok apartment district was able to build a relatively harmonious neighborhood community. However, the problems of the apartment district were revealed in the course of reconstruction after 2000’s as each Apartment complex(planned unit) was rebuilt as an exclusive gated community. Therefore, a more sophisticated urban design strategy is required in order to maintain the neighborhood community of an Apartment district. |
