Abstract This study aimed to investigate characteristics of gated communities with apartment complexes constructed in the Urban Renewal Acceleration District of Seoul, and to empirically analyze the resulting changes of the accessibility to elementary schools. To this end, the characteristics of gated communities were analyzed through the on-site survey and drawing documentation, and the changes of the walking accessibility to elementary schools were calculated and visualized through the service area network analysis using GIS. As a result, each of the Urban Renewal Acceleration Districts and apartment complexes showed similar or different characteristics in terms of gated community, which affected the walking accessibility to elementary schools. The stronger the control of outsiders in the apartment complexes, the more walking accessibility to elementary schools decreased, and the larger the complexes, the greater the degree of decrease. Finally, the study provides fundamental implications such as improving the openness of complexes, planning small-scale complexes, and maintaining continuing management and supervision, for the exclusiveness of today’s apartment complexes and the disconnection from surrounding areas.
