Abstract |
This study analyses the characteristics of urban forms centering around the urban tissue of 18 small and medium sized cities in Gangwondo, presents frames of analysis for different time periods through approaches to the dimensions of space politics, and deduces detailed characteristics based on the components of urban tissue. The implications were as follows. Seven city unit administrative districts and eleven county unit administrative districts had urban space characteristics of different forms and scales and these came from historical, geological, and environmental effects. In particular, it was confirmed that all of the unique form characteristic deduced through the characteristic analysis of streets, blocks, land parcels, and buildings acted as causes for the formative differentiation or similarities of each city and county administrative district. Also, it was found that topographical and geological characteristics such as rivers, coastlines, and lakes affect the forms of entire cities and most urban areas (city centers) displayed formalized urban spatial structures based on grid-patterns. Land plots that are maintained during periods of growth are left as they are in partial military areas and in city administrative districts where downtown decline is occurring, displaying the reality of provincial towns in periods of decline. |
