Abstract Risks imposed by climate change are increasingly expanding. While more attention is paid to the elderly and ill in South Korea, a rapidly urbanizing and aging country, young single-person households have long been out of interest despite being socio-economically vulnerable. This study explores the impact of heat vulnerability on the spatial distribution of young single-person households in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. A heat vulnerability index was developed at the city-county-district level based on climatic, geographic, infrastructure, and public service conditions to understand each area’s vulnerability. Results present that the higher the heat vulnerability, the more young single-person households reside. A partial least square regression model identified the impacts of heat vulnerability elements on the proportion of young single-person households in each area. It was confirmed that some factors, such as emergency medical facilities, have an uncertain relationship with the proportion. Findings of this study suggest that young single-person households should be considered vulnerable and require expanded design and policy measures.
