Abstract |
This study examined the possibility of using network analysis in the design process of large urban parks. We analyzed four award-winning schemes of the “Chuncheon Citizen Park Master Plan Design Competition,” held to transform the Chuncheon Camp Page site into a civic park. As a result of network and correlation analyses between the design proposals and the current urban environment-city buildings, bus stations, and Chuncheon train station-to see whether the designer’s intentions are appropriately implemented, proposal A showed high relation, while proposal B was low. In the C and D proposals, the correlations between the design and buildings and the train station were low, respectively. This study gives three implications. First, the trade-off method integrated with empirical accessibility analysis and the designer’s conceptual design can reflect the existing urban contexts; therefore, it could be applied to the park design, even useful in the technical review phase of a park design competition. Second, the designer can continuously update the city-park connectivity and park circulation plan presented conceptually through empirical accessibility analysis to enhance the rationality of the design. Third, the trade-off method proposed can guide the future urban development of surrounding neighborhoods to improve the city-park connectivity. |
