Abstract This study aimed to propose a range of park-city interface design strategies using Yongsan Park, the first national urban park in Korea, as a case study. This initiative was led by the central government on a site previously used as the Yongsan Military Base, which had been disconnected from the adjacent urban fabric for a long time. The analysis focused on the schematic level design for the park entrance areas and interfaces as proposed between 2012 to 2018, followed by the international design competition. By analyzing the physical characteristics and identities of the adjacent urban areas along the park boundary of approximately 11 kilometers, a set of eight park-city interface types was proposed. Various interface design strategies were suggested that could support community programs, and enhance connectivity with the city, including the key entrance areas. In the process of creating large parks with high complexity and uncertainty, the design proposal was meaningful in that it was proposed to be flexible and fluid rather than definitive, maintaining the concept of the park as an urban magnet, a driver for urban growth and regeneration. This study will be also important as part of the initial design materials to be leveraged on a practical level for collaborating with the Seoul Metropolitan Government to improve the congruence with the city plan and the management plan of the park’s surrounding areas.
