Abstract This study aimed to explore the urban design and urban development of GTX station areas with the goal of future-oriented responses to physical changes caused by the construction of GTX. For this, the study derived general principles for urban design of GTX station areas, applied them to actual sites, and examined the contextual transformations of urban design plans. For this, the urban design of GTX station areas was specifically carried out according to the following process. First, the current situation and characteristics of GTX were summarized through theoretical considerations of GTX and GTX construction. Second, the process and general principles for urban design of GTX station areas were derived through the analysis of operation process and contents in the Urban Mobility Studio. Third, the general principles of urban design were applied to GTX station areas in Yeouido, Cheongnyangni, Yongsan, and Mangwoo. The transformations of urban design plans according to the urban context were examined. Accordingly, the study presented the method and principles for urban design of GTX station areas in terms of density, use, and transportation, suggesting that the implementation should follow the urban context of actual sites.
