Abstract Walkability of the high-density residential streets on slopes are generally poor, however, it is not yet fully known what the detailed physical environmental factors affect the walkability of the streets. In this study, data on the physical environmental factors of the street were collected through GIS, street view, and field survey in order to evenly utilize the data on the macro and micro scale. Five study sites were selected in Seoul, and 23 pedestrian environmental factors were investigated for 240 street sections these were chosen through quota sampling. There were significant differences in walkability for each street depending on the type of roadside house, type of separation of pedestrians, the street structure and the degree of inclination of the site. Differences were also found in the elements of the walking environment, which were detrimental factors in various aspects of walkability.
