Abstract |
In March 2020, the World Health Organization has declared the novel COVID-19outbreak a global pandemic. Many cities have responded with proposing new publicspace strategies to control the pandemic. Assuming that Korean cities face another, severe pandemic in the future, this study proposes new urban design and publicspace strategies as a social distancing policy tool. First, using a case-study method,we examined urban design and public space management strategies specificallyemployed in cities under the current COVID-19 pandemic. Out of 50 collectedcases, we found that open restaurant programs were the most common strategies. Second, we applied the open restaurant program in Seoul with analyzing feasibilityin the case of Yonsei Street in the Sinchon area. It was found that up to 70% ofindoor dining space may be secured next to corresponding each establishment whena flexible open restaurant program applied. After testing this feasibility study, weproposed principles of urban design strategies to respond future pandemics. |
