Abstract |
The environmental criminology theories indicate that urban environments are closelyrelated to crime incidences. However, existing studies on the relationships betweenurban environments and crime incidences show mixed results. This study examines therelationships between urban environments and crime incidence using spatial regressionmodels with comprehensive spatial big data such as Points-of-Interest (POI), Naverstreet view, civil complaints, and street network. The results of this study indicatedthat crime incidences are more likely to be associated with commercial POI facilities,POI diversity, and street network integration. In addition, crime incidences are closelyassociated with a higher number of civil complaints such as trash, noise, and illegalparking. In contrast, crime incidences are positively associated with a lower proportionof vegetation. Lastly, this study confirmed the spillover effects of vegetation and civilcomplaints on crime incidences. This study is helpful for urban design practices andurban policy to mitigate crime activities and promote urban safety monitoring theurban environment with accumulated urban big data. |
