Abstract This study aims to predict the traditional market(TM) extinction and urge a policy change to revitalize TM. As of 2020, 123 traditional markets located in Jeollanam-do were the analysis target. This study analyzed the determinants of the shrinkage of TM. It confirmed that the more the number of people in the trade area of TM, the higher the location efficiency and the tendency of TM to be maintained. After estimating the population within in the trade areas of TM from a 100m×100m grid, the Inverted Two-Step Floating Catchment Area Method (i2SFCA) was used to explore the location efficiency of TM. Based on the estimations, we forecasted the Shrinkage of TM. The results revealed a few interesting facts. First, in Jeollanam-do, over the past 15 years, there has been an apparent phenomenon in which TMs located in sparsely populated areas have been shrinking. Second, TMs with a higher probability of shrinking were predicted to occur in all regions of Jeollanam-do in the future. In the light of the results, this study suggested policy tasks and directions for sound activation of TMs.
