Abstract |
This study analyzed the effect of the opening of the competitors on the locationefficiency of traditional markets. As of 2020, 464 traditional markets in the Seoulmetropolitan area were examined to investigate changes in location efficiency beforeand after the opening of hypermarkets and super super markets (SSMs). TheInverted Two-Step Floating Catchment Area Method (i2SFCA) was used to analyzethe location efficiency. A road network-based trade area was measured, and thepopulation was extracted from a grid of 100m×100m. As a result, 90% oftraditional markets have already formed fierce competition. 92.8% of the traditionalmarkets’ trade areas were also included in trade areas of hypermarkets and SSMs. 96.1% of the population in the traditional market district overlapped with thecompetitors. Due to the deepening of spatial competition resulting from the openingof hypermarkets and SSMs, the decrease in location efficiency of traditional marketsreached 73%. Traditional markets with significantly reduced location efficiency wereconcentrated in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do, adjacent to Seoul. |
