Abstract |
This study examined the inequal accessibility to elementary, middle, and highschools in South Korea. This study employed Gini index, Theil index, andPopulation-weighted Theil index as well as Getis-Ord Gi model using accessibilitydata from Korea Transport Institute. The following are several key conclusions. First, the travel time required for elementary, middle, and high school for residentsin rural areas was about 30 minutes longer than those in urban areas. Second,Eup/Myeon/Dongs (EMDs) with lower vehicle accessibility also had loweraccessibility to public transportation, and EMDs with lower access to elementaryschool also had lower access to middle and high schools. Third, while EMDs inthe Seoul Metropolitan area improved accessibility to the educational institutions in2019 compared to 2017, EMDs in rural area indicated a worsening of theaccessibility inequality. Fourth, the degree of inequality in accessibility to publictransportation was significantly higher than that in access to vehicles. This researchcontributes to (1) presenting a comprehensive spatial and equity analysis ofaccessibility to educational institutions throughout South Korea, and (2) offeringpolicy implications. |
