Abstract |
This paper compares and analyzes the microclimate and thermal comfort conditions before and after the creation of the new Gwanghwamun Square using ENVI-met. It concludes that the overall temperature and wind speed of the site decreased while humidity increased. Thermal comfort has improved to some extent, but thermal stress level was the same because the change has been little. The place where thermal comfort has improved the most is the center. Shades formed by trees seem to yield great influence on improving thermal comfort. As the Gwanghwamun intersection was changed to a U-shape, temperature on the north side increased significantly. This suggests that the new design failed to fully consider the prevailing wind direction. Gwanghwamun Square is located in the city center where the population and development density are high. Frequent gatherings and activities in the square suggests the importance of heat management. This paper evaluates the changes in the microclimate and thermal comfort of the newly created Gwanghwamun Square and presents policy implications. |
