Abstract The purpose of this study is to reveal the influence of resident-engaged urban projects on local inhabitants, employing a spatial cognitive approach. More specifically, the study delves into factors that are perceptible within the spatial context and examines the extent of their impact. To achieve this, a comprehensive survey was conducted, encompassing residents who actively participated in the urban regeneration project within Iksan city, as well as those who remained uninvolved. The study’s findings underscore several key points. Firstly, a discernible disparity was established in the subjective perceptions of local resources among residents. Secondly, the areas affiliated with educational activities and participation programs emerged as pivotal determinants in shaping the perceived character of spaces for residents. Thirdly, residents’ depictions of their neighborhood maps were classified into six distinct typologies, with urban components such as roads, edifices, transit stations, and public squares notably influencing how residents perceive their surroundings. Fourthly, prominent urban demarcation factors, including boulevards, intersections, and railroads, were identified as significant influencers on residents’ spatial perception. These elements notably shape how residents gauge the boundaries of their residential expanse. Lastly, the mode of resident engagement emerged as a pivotal factor in influencing both the spatial considerations and the range of perceived living spaces.
