Abstract This paper aims to propose a design direction for a human-centered square that enhances the pedestrian-friendly environment and integrates with the surrounding urban development and regeneration plan. The study is conducted within the framework of the ‘Pyeongtaek Station Square International Design Competition’. Four design strategies are as follows: Firstly, the current plaza, divided by traffic, is transformed into an integrated space by relocating traffic facilities to the periphery of the plaza. This reconfiguration enables an uninterrupted pedestrian experience. Secondly, ground-level walking connections are established to facilitate easy movement between the plaza and its surrounding areas. Thirdly, the central void space within the plaza is transformed into a vibrant area for diverse activities throughout the year with the addition of a canopy structure. This structure not only provides a functional space but also symbolizes the identity of Pyeongtaek City. Lastly, the arrangement of forests and trees is diversified to foster green networking in the surrounding area. Through this research, the possibilities of revitalizing Pyeongtaek Station Square are explored, aiming to transform it from a function-centered station square into a social and cultural hub that attracts people.
