Abstract Urban crimes are influenced not only by their structural characteristics but also by their symbolic and perceptual features. Many theories in criminology support the idea that the symbolic and perceptual characteristics of a city can affect crime rates, but empirical studies are scare due to data constraints. Particularly, micro-scale crime studies are severely restricted because of limitations in crime data. In this study, we utilized 112 crime report data with location information which cover the entire Seoul city using 100m×100m cells. We examined the impact of alleyway characteristics, perceptual aspects of alleyways, and the placement of crime prevention facilities on urban crime occurrence spots using negative binomial regression and propensity score matching. The analysis revealed significant associations between perceptual characteristics of alleyways, such as cleanliness, mobility, accessibility, aging, and safety, as well as the presence of crime prevention facilities such as CCTV, security lights, and security bells, with the occurrence of crime, and these relationships vary by the type of crime.. Based on these findings, we proposed deliberate and policy-based alternatives to suppress crime.
