Abstract |
The rate of depressive disorders in Korean adults has been increasing over the past 20 years, and many people are now experiencing depression. This study analyzed the neighborhood characteristics affecting residents’ depression. In particular, this study aims to show that neighborhood environment characteristics, measured from the perspective of residents, are important variables affecting residents’ depression. Based on these findings, this study also seeks to provide policy implications. The analysis used multilevel logistic regression utilized data from the Gyeonggi-do Community Health Survey 2019 and Naver Street View images. The results showed that individual and household characteristics, as well as social environment and neighborhood environment characteristics at the administrative district level, were strongly related to residents’ depression. In addition, streetscape characteristics such as road ratio, sky ratio, and greenery ratio in the neighborhood environment were also found to have a statistically significant relationship with depression. The significance of this study is that it derived the relationship between residents’ mental health, such as depression, and neighborhood environment characteristics, and provided policy implications for mental health promotion. |
