Abstract |
Since the 1980s, the rapid urbanization in South Korea's metropolitan areas has precipitated a multitude of urban challenges. This urbanization process, in particular, has eroded the traditional social bonds and social capital that were once prevalent in our society. Therefore, it has become crucial to develop strategies to bolster social capital and reinforce social cohesion. This study aims to classify municipalities in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, based on their population sizes and to analyze the impact of neighborhood environmental characteristics on the level of social capital. For the analysis, the “2019 Community Health Survey” data for Gyeonggi Province and a multilevel ordinal regression model were utilized. The results indicate a close relationship between urban neighborhood environmental characteristics and the level of social capital. Furthermore, the influence of neighborhood environmental characteristics on the level of social capital varied depending on the city size. This study is significant in providing policy implications for promoting social capital by analyzing the relationship between neighborhood environmental characteristics and the level of social capital based on a city size. |
