Abstract |
This research examined the activities of seniors in 6 parks in Seoul and interviewed them to apprehend considerations for senior-friendly parks. The most frequently observed activity of seniors in the park is walking as exercise. Through field observation, the study found out that seniors in public space are not willing to communicate frequently with strangers and there is spatial segregation according to different age user groups. There is also an obvious difference in the activity pattern by sex. The male seniors preferred chess and go as leisure activities in parks. The female seniors often used the park with their grandchildren. Through the interview, it is verified that the main purpose for seniors visiting parks is exercise. Seniors preferred the quiet and safe atmosphere of the park and thought trees with shade were the most crucial factor for the senior’s park use. While the male seniors felt uncomfortable talking with strangers, the female seniors wanted more social engagement with new users. As the result of the field survey and the interview, the research suggests more exercise facilities for the senior group and abundant greenery with shade in the senior-friendly park. A sufficient resting place and gathering facility for the seniors are essential for the senior-friendly park. In making a senior-friendly park, the difference in activities between male and female groups should be considered. The separation of quiet space and active space is also required. |
