Abstract This study aimed to analyze the impact of Urban Residential Housing on the sunlight characteristics of nearby residential areas, focusing on residential neighborhoods in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. Urban Residential Housing was introduced to provide affordable small housing units, but due to their high number of floors and density, there are concerns about their negative impact on the sunlight of nearby residential areas. Therefore, the study conducted a sunlight analysis on the densely populated areas of Urban Residential Housing and found that both total sunlight hours and sunlight area ratio decreased in 2019, when Urban Residential Housing was introduced, compared to 2009, and that both total sunlight hours and sunlight area ratio of houses adjacent to Urban Residential Housing were significantly lower than those of non-adjacent houses. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the impact of architectural factors of Urban Residential Housing on sunlight characteristics, and it was found that height difference and separation distance from Urban Residential Housing are important variables that affect sunlight characteristics. This study is significant as an empirical study that examines Urban Residential Housing in terms of sunlight characteristics.
