Abstract |
Since the 1960s, South Korean government has implemented new town development projects to address social challenges. Seongnam City, through new town developments, has experienced the expansion of urban area but faced issues of imbalance and structural disconnection between old-town and new urban centers. While previous research on the impacts of new town development has primarily focused on social data, limited studies have examined its spatial configuration impacts. In this study, Seongnam’s major developments are categorized into three phases, and GIS and Space Syntax are employed to quantitatively analyze the temporal changes in spatial configuration and their effects on local networks. The findings reveal that Seongnam has undergone quantitatively and qualitative continuous urban expansion, accompanied by the relative decline of the old-town. Also, the shift in the city’s hierarchical center indicates that man-made development may lead to structural disconnection. This study provides essential data for understanding the impacts of new town development on urban spatial configuration, and is expected to contribute to sustainable urban design and policy-making. |
