Abstract |
The “15-minute city” has emerged as a transformative urban strategy, spreading and evolving in cities worldwide. However, as a concept originally developed for European cities like Paris, its application in Korean urban contexts requires both reinterpretation and physical improvements to existing urban spatial structures through urban design approaches. This study explores the application of the 15-minute city concept to Korean cities through a comprehensive review of related literature, domestic and international case studies, and comparative analysis of urban design theories. It further analyzes urban design proposals for the pilot district of the “15-Minute City Jeju” project promoted by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. Based on this analysis, the study identifies four key urban design considerations: first, determining appropriate urban density through review of higher-level urban plans and architectural frameworks; second, restructuring existing spatial systems to establish street networks and masterplans; third, adopting three-dimensional, integrated urban-architectural design approaches; and fourth, ensuring adaptability to future changes such as redevelopment or reconstruction. This study contributes to translating the strategic concept of the 15-minute city into applicable urban design principles. |
