Abstract This study adopts an ecological resilience perspective to analyze the temporal changes in the Myeong-dong commercial district, focusing on its experiences of crisis and recovery. Unlike engineering resilience-which emphasizes a return to a prior state-Myeong-dong has exhibited ecological resilience by adapting to external shocks through functional recovery and structural transformation. Since the 1910s, the district has repeatedly undergone changes due to various crises, including Japanese colonization, the Gangnam development boom, the IMF financial crisis, the THAAD-related ban on Chinese tourism, and the COVID-19 pandemic. By examining changes in employment levels, business types, and spatial functions, this study reveals that the revitalization of Myeong-dong is not merely a process of restoration but one of reconstruction. It highlights the significance of business diversity in enhancing resilience and sustainability. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the ecological resilience framework is applicable to other historically significant or tourism-dependent commercial areas. This research contributes to understanding how commercial districts can overcome crises and pursue long-term sustainability through adaptation and transformation.
