Abstract |
Through Gramsci's theory of hegemony, this study explores how exhibition facilities in Gyeongseong were established as a means of governance during the Japanese colonial period, and their roles in forming a relationship with the public of Joseon Dynasty. An analysis of the exhibition facilities in Gyeongseong leads to the following conclusions. First, this study found that Japan sought to secure the legitimacy of its governance by establishing cultural hegemony as early as the 1910s. Second, it was confirmed that the colonization of the exhibition facilities as a means of internalization was reorganized from history to art and science. Third, fragmented ethnic space referred to as a ‘dual city’ was experienced in the context of private exhibition facilities as resistance to the ruling class, but it did not last due to historical and international circumstances. This study is significant in that it analyzes exhibition facilities through the lens of social theory, shedding light on the unique characteristics of colonial Joseon Dynasty and the imperial period, which were intricately appropriated during the distorted modernization process under Japanese colonial period. |
