| Abstract |
Under the social conditions of Korea, which has entered a super-aged society, the multimodal mobility and social relationships of older adults are expected to have a significant impact on their quality of life in later years. This study empirically examined the factors influencing the quality of life among older adults by analyzing data from 9,784 individuals aged 65 or older residing in 17 metropolitan cities and provinces, based on the 2023 National Survey of Older Koreans. The results indicated that family and social relationships were the most influential determinants of quality of life, with social networks involving friends, neighbors, and local communities exerting a significant positive effect on life satisfaction. In addition, multimodal mobility comprising independent walking ability, accessibility to public transportation, and pedestrian safety was found to provide an essential foundation for maintaining independent daily living and active social participation. The absence of independent walking ability or cessation of driving led to social exclusion and isolation, resulting in a decline in quality of life, whereas higher perceived levels of pedestrian safety and public transportation convenience contributed positively to life satisfaction. Although the direct influence of multimodal mobility on quality of life was weaker than that of social relationships, it served as a mediating factor that facilitated social participation and supported independent living among older adults. |
