| Abstract |
Urban Morphometric Methodology (UMM) inherits the theoretical foundation of Conzenian urban morphology while enhancing reproducibility and objectivity of urban form analysis by quantifying morphological characteristics. This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical background and analytical procedures of UMM as a method for analyzing urban form. UMM is valuable in that it proposes the ‘morphological cell’ as a unit of analysis to minimize the subjectivity of morphological interpretation, and offeres a set of objective indicators for describing urban form. In an application to the historical center of Seoul, the analysis reveals statistically significant morphological differences among identified spatial units. Additionally, SHAP interpretation based on an XGBoost confirmed that UMM effectively captures the spatial structure of the historical center as shaped by topographic conditions. UMM is meaningful in that it offers a common analytical language for applying Conzen’s theory in the Korean context. However, as such analyses are currently limited to the description of urban form, future research should aim to expand the methodology to explain the dynamic characteristics of urban form by incorporating socio-economic dimensions |
