Abstract This study, from a social exchange theory perspective, explores the structural relationship between forest tourism exchange frequency, preference types, and regional revitalization perceptions to address regional extinction. Analyzing 1,502 adults via Python-based linear mixed models and SEM, the results show that increased exchange frequency significantly strengthens preferences for all forest tourism types-ecology, welfare, and infrastructure. Even after controlling for socio-demographics, exchange frequency maintained an independent influence on revitalization perceptions. A key distinction emerged in perceptual paths: positive perceptions followed a partial mediation model, whereas negative perceptions followed a full mediation model occurring solely through preference types. This indicates that negative concerns, such as environmental degradation, are driven by spatial usage patterns rather than visitation frequency itself. Specifically, infrastructure preferences mitigated negative concerns, while ecology and welfare preferences increased them. In conclusion, forest-based revitalization requires an integrated design that incorporates relationship-building through exchange frequency and perception-based, differentiated spatial management strategies.
