Abstract This study examines the structural limitations of the smart city paradigm, which has been based on data collection and connectivity, and conceptually explores the emerging discourse of AI-driven urban transformation in the era of generative AI. It treats Urban AI, AI City, and AI Urbanism not as established standard concepts, but as an emerging conceptual cluster for understanding post-smart-city urban change, and reconstructs them as an operational environment, an urban operating system, and an interpretive layer. Through four analytical dimensions namely technology, agency, space, and governance the study develops a conceptual map of AI-driven urban transformation and its implications for urban design. The analysis shows that, while smart cities have operated as reactive systems centered on connection, measurement, integration, and efficiency, AI-driven urban transformation is reshaping cities into more dynamic and adaptive systems based on learning, prediction, generation, and partial or conditional autonomy. This shift may expand design alternative exploration, human-AI collaboration, urban spatial analysis, and AI-enabled participatory and inclusive design, requiring a reconfiguration of the objects, processes, and professional roles of urban design.
