Abstract The widespread use of renewable energy resources, essential for achieving carbon neutrality, intensifies the volatility of the power system, leading to a reduction in the inertia of the power generation units. As a response to this, and to secure inertia resources, the 10th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand mentions the utilization of synchronous condensers in the medium and long term as a solution. Thus, KEPCO reviewed replacing the newly planned FACTS equipment with a synchronous condenser. Among several locations, the FACTS facility, which was planned to improve transient stability in the Jeonnam region, was the subject of review.
While the evaluation indicated that a synchronous condenser requiring approximately up to 1.5 times the capacity of the intended FACTS was needed. Even though more capacity was needed, it was necessary to utilize the functions of the synchronous condenser, such as providing short-circuit current and providing inertia, and so on.
