Abstract With the increasing penetration level of renewable energy sources, the rotational inertia in power systems is gradually decreasing by replacing the conventional synchronous generators (SGs) with inverter-based resources. The loss of inertia deteriorates power system dynamics such as large frequency excursion after disturbance. To enhance the system stability, the grid-forming (GFM) inverters have gained increasing attention owing to their capability of forming AC grid without connecting an extra voltage source. However, a high penetration of GFM inverters may cause unexpected couplings of SGs and grid-following (GFL) inverters, because of the control logic of GFM inverters. Thus, the stability analysis of the power system composed of SGs, GFM, and GFL inverters is needed. In this study, we developed the state-space model of entire power system, and subsequently performed the analysis of small-signal stability, particularly in focusing on the virtual inertia control of GFM inverters.v
