Abstract Renewable energy has gained significant attention due to its eco-friendly nature and low carbon emissions. However, as the number of distributed energy resources (DERs) increases, they can influence the magnitude of fault currents in power systems. This change can affect the operating time of overcurrent relays (OCRs), potentially leading to large-scale blackouts or safety issues caused by overcurrent. Although research on superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) has been conducted to limit fault currents, the application of SFCLs in distribution systems with DERs can complicate the coordination between protective relays. In this paper, the protection coordination between OCRs in distribution system with induction generators through proper relay setting adjustment were studied.
