Title Feasibility Assessment of Propagation Constant Estimation Using TFDR and SFWR for Submarine Cable Insulation Diagnosis

Abstract This study examines whether propagation constants estimated by reflectometry can track insulation-property changes relevant to wet-type submarine cable diagnosis. Time-frequency domain reflectometry (TFDR) and stepped-frequency waveform reflectometry (SFWR) were applied under identical conditions to a calibrated XLPE cable model. Relative permittivity and input loss tangent were varied separately while the other parameter was fixed. Attenuation and phase constants were estimated from the reflected signals, and an effective loss tangent including conductor and dielectric losses was calculated. Increasing relative permittivity increased both constants, with a larger relative increase in the phase constant, resulting in a lower effective loss tangent. Increasing the input loss tangent increased the estimated effective loss tangent in both methods. The consistent trends demonstrate the feasibility of tracking dielectric-property changes using reflectometry and provide a basis for future validation on wet-type submarine cables.
